SNM drama consists of introductory story (word Beginning) and five sections (round). The word begins with a prayer to contain about Syiwabudha, which is dedicated to play it running safely. In addition, also recounted the origin (source) story, who figures Damar Wulan, and hope to the next generation of poets to make the play better.
This drama revolves around the title character Damar Wulan Raden Elephant, a hero in the kingdom of Majapahit, who then sentenced to death for allegedly wanted to take over the kingdom. He is the son of Air and Nawangsasi Patih, and nephew of Patih Majapahit. Damar Wulan within two talent flow, namely a pendita talent and the talent of a warrior. Both talent is what makes the main character in this SNM despair though, as if to be an undecided. Both talents were also, finally, bring Damar Wulan in a difficult and confusing situation, when the Majapahit require energy to face the Duke Wirabumi, Menak Orange, who defected to the kingdom. He is in a dilemma between duty to become a knight and a desire to become a pendita. Both options are equally difficult or unprofitable for the time being in Majapahit. But then, with a variety of considerations and thoughts that are difficult, and thanks to urge her lover, Anjasmara, she decided to go to Wirabumi as a knight, in order to impose Menak Orange.
Why Damar Wulan figures facing such a dilemma? The question was deliberately made to avoid wrong interpretation of the main character of this personal. The answer to that question will greatly help the understanding of the character Damar Wulan, as an essential part of the meaning of the whole story SNM.
As a descendant of the knight, since childhood Damar Wulan has been prepared to become a knight. The knights of this has been demonstrated by assisting the Duke of Tuban war against Menak Orange, in Wirabumi. In that war, Damar Wulan shows reliability as a soldier of war. Hence also, he recommended by the Duke of Tuban to mengantikannya as a squad leader to Wirabumi war. However, after returning to Paluh Amba, after helping Duke fought Amba, she became uncertain. He realized, that "when the war is still valid just remember to face forward, destroying any who hinder me" (page 24). However, after that, he always remembered those who had killed. He did not have the heart to see the child and his mother waited for the father and husband at the gate. The crying child and the mother was very sad heart and make his life miserable, and guilty feelings are always a burden.
Meanwhile, Damar Wulan also view and think that Majapahit not need help. Actually, without any attack Menak Orange, Majapahit had collapsed. That was caused by 'moral bobrok'nya the pendita and the nobles. Religion is no longer necessary to raise the mind, but needed to strengthen the power. Pendita only useful to increase ignorance, superstition and religion made statue is worshiped like a god. The knight has been accepted as the robber, while people are increasingly thin and miserable.
Both the above conditions encourage Damar Wulan to think choosing to become a pendita. Hence also, he's old enough to sit idly by and ignored the Majapahit who 'almost' is controlled by Menak Orange. Perhaps, it was done by Damar Wulan was to redeem sinful feelings earlier. Thus, he also hopes will be able to realize the pendita and the nobles and restore religion to its original function and position. The final choice of Damar Wulan make his wish come true. He won against Menak Orange and was appointed Queen Angabaya. He managed to restore morality and religion in its original position among the people, but he is despised by the pendita and the nobles, who feared his power will be lost. Finally, Damar Wulan sentenced to death, because the accused would seize power by both the earlier Majapahit. Although, Damar Wulan dead, but he has managed to bring its people. This was evidenced by the anger of the people heard Damar Wulan sentenced to death. They attacked the Majapahit and then Majapahit kingdom collapsed and was replaced by Islam. ***
